Performance Arts
Indra has been working professionally in the Bay Area for over a decade as a director, writer, performance artist, dancer, chanteuse, fire dancer, clown, actor, costume and prop designer and fabricator as both a solo act and as an active performing member of many vital bay area theater and dance troupes. She is the co-founder and former co-Artistic Director of two successful San Francisco Dance troupes: COLLAPSINGsilence Butoh Dance Troupe and Go Go Pro ( http://www.gogopro.com).
She has apprenticed as a prop fabricator and stage technician for Sydney and Arthur Carson’s Nightletter Theater, manipulating sets, and running onstage film, video and slide projectors. She has studied contemporary theater and play writing with world-renowned beat poet and playwright, Michael McClure.
Solo Act “Exotic Cabaret”
Indra directs and writes her own performance fusion pieces mixing cabaret songs with movement, comedy monologues and her elaborate handmade costumes.
Performing as “The Indra”, “Fifi le Freedom”, and “Frau Goodloe”, Indra sings Cabaret songs originally sung by Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Edith Piaff. She has worked with John Anaya (guitar), Rob Reich (pianist), Ian Dickinson (composer), Leslie Presley’s Viva la Vida, The San Francisco Burlesque Orchestra, Mr. Lucky’s Band, The Va Va Voom House Band, The Spectacular!Spectacular! House Band, Cabaret Verdalet’s House Band, and many other DJs and musicians. Singing in choirs since she was a child, Indra has trained vocally with Horus Tolsen and with Faith Wintrup.
Indra also works as a professional Burlesque artist for many public and private events.
Indra has trained in Belly Dance, Afro Haitian, Afro Cuban, Odessi Indian Temple Dance, Butoh, Swing Dance, Samba, Ballroom Dance, and has taught workshops on stage management.
Theater Projects with others
In 2005 Indra toured for five months with Fluffgirl Burlesque Society going to four countries, the UK, Germany, Canada and the US as a singer, burlesque artist, and comedian. Indra was in “An Hour of Magic,” a theater piece suitable for children, written and directed by Paul Nathan held at the Climate Theater in December 2004. She currently tours with Magician Paul Nathan as needed. She was a member of Spectacular! Spectacular! ( http://www.spectacularspectacular.com) And is a Zombie Pinup (http://www.zombiepinups.com). Other former professional performance groups include: Double Process, Collapsing Silence Butoh Dance Troupe, Go Go Pro, Hot Pink Feathers, Lolapalooza, Sharkbait, Nightletter Theater, Unattended Children’s Theater, Lance Theater and many other collaborations.
Visual Arts
As the daughter of fine artists Indra has enjoyed photography, print-making, painting, and drawing ever since she could walk and lift a camera or paintbrush! (She still has strong urges to taste paint but as an adult she realizes cadmium yellow isn’t a good choice!) She is a silver and goldsmith, having apprenticed at 14 Karats Fine Jewelry in Berkeley and having studied under Bruce Metcalfe at Kent State University and Maureen DaSilva and Collette at the California College of Arts.
Corset Modeling
With a love of beautiful, nostalgic, and unusual fashions, Indra models for Biologic Designs ( http://www.biologicdesigns.com) online catalogue and performs in their fashion shows. As a catalogue model for Dark Garden Unique Corsetry (http://www.darkgarden.net) in 1995 and 1996, Indra continues to promote their exquisite designs.
Fetish and Fine Art Modeling
Indra has modeled for many fetish and fine art photographers and artists including Jeffery Von Spangenberg, Ruby Rieke, John Carey, Larry Utley, Malcolm Weir, Michael Manning, A.R. Goodman, Don Spiro, Studio Hadra, and others.
Fashion Design
Indra designs and makes her own costumes and is an accomplished milliner. Her hats have been featured in many local San Francisco fashion shows. Her designs are featured on her store’s website and in local San Francisco boutiques.
Film, Television and Radio Credit Highlights
Indra has been featured numerous times for television, radio and film. Some highlights include Indra's character "Fifi Le Freedom" being featured on the NBC news report on Exotic World 2003 and 2004. Also two TV interviews for KRON News as a San Francisco personality, and a TV interview by Germany 's Pro Sieben. As the featured Burlesque dancer at the grand opening of the new Condor, she was filmed and interviewed for ABC and CBS news. She’s been on HBO Sex Bytes as a model for artist Michael Manning and as a dancer. Film interviews include Michael Dean's documentary on Independent Artists, and a German Documentary on the San Francisco Fetish and Gothic Underground Scene.
Radio features include "What Are You Looking At?" aired on "This American Life" by Sarah Vowell featuring Indra and her prankster friends' Gothic Makeover Team. This feature was subsequently used in Sarah Vowell's book, Take the Cannoli: Stories from the New World .
